Located on the south east coast of France, Nice is the second-largest city on the Mediterranean, founded around 350BC by the Greeks and named in honour of the goddess of victory, Nike. It became one of the busiest trading ports on the Ligurian coast and today is the second most popular city after Paris.
The small historic old town (Vieux Nice) is characterful, slow-paced and un-touristy. It feels like a medieval village yet is moments away from all the main tourist sites. Locals live at a relaxed pace here, amid an intimate maze of narrow streets curving between old buildings with red tiled roofs, small restaurants and open markets.
“When I realised I would see that light every morning, I could not believe my happiness … I decided never to leave Nice and remained here for almost my entire existence”. Henri Matisse
